New Resort on Mexico’s Riviera Maya

Capella Bahia Maroma

The bathroom looks big enough to sleep in at the swanky Capella Bahia Maroma, the latest resort set to open near Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. But you may find it hard to tear yourself away from your Mayan-inspired suite, where you can stretch out and enjoy the ocean breeze while listening to tunes (iPod docking stations, LCD televisions, and wireless Internet are found in each of the 86 accommodations). Opening date scheduled for November 2009.

Brix Condos- Revisited

Brix flatsSix months ago I reviewed the Brix lofts (on 10th Avenue). This week, I had the chance to tour the completed condos on the Broadway side.

The building does not have a ton of amenities, mainly the roof top deck, central courtyard and two lobbies. For those who want to economize on HOA and price, this will be welcome news. For those who are looking for lots of building bells and whistles, this may not be your kind of condo. Brix has recently reduced prices on some of their homes.

The overall feel of the building is quite pleasant, especially the central courtyard. It is surprisingly quiet given that Broadway is just on the other side of the building. Unfortunately for Brix, a 6 story apartment building has started their construction right across the street and this will block most of the west facing views.

The two floor plans I found most interesting during the tour are the open one bedroom plus den and two bedroom homes on the north side of the building. In a typical open one bedroom floor plan, closet space is usually small or limited. In this floor plan, there is a very good sized walk-in closet right across from the bedroom. The den is close to the living area but not taking up the living room space. There is also a little entry area before you see the rest of the home. No views to speak due to the new apartment building across the street.

As for the two bedroom floor plan, #410 came across as the most appealing. The two bedrooms are separated by the living room. The kitchen is well laid out with an island. There are almost floor to ceiling windows in the living area. Layout is very open and efficient.

There are a few nice features in the Broadway homes. You will find a rain shower and either a single or double under-mounted sink in the bathroom. In a couple of the two bedroom homes, there is a walk-in shower. In most homes, the kitchen will either have a stationary or movable island. The only thing that I am not really fond in some of the open one bedroom homes is the bathroom. They are only accessible from the bedroom (less privacy when you have guest visiting).

Overall, the Broadway condos are more contemporary in design than their town home/ lofts counterparts on 10th Ave. The level of finishes are of similar quality.

Icon Tower and Enso

Icon Tower aerial map Icon Tower

The site of Icon Tower is up for Sale. The approximately 11,000 square foot lot was planned as a 32-story condo but later on the developer decided to change it to an apartment. However, they were unable to obtain financing for the project. Read more here.

Enso Grand opening

Enso will be having their Grand Opening this weekend from 11.00am to 5.00pm. The project is approximately 60% presold and working on obtaining final approval from Fannie Mae. There are not a whole lot of new projects out there that are interesting to visit unless you don't mind crossing over the bridge to Bellevue (yeah, I know). If you are in the market, I would check out Enso. All the floor plans on the 12th floor are open for the public to view.

ArtHaus- Capitol Hill Condo

ArthausArtHaus is a nine-unit boutique condominium conversion located inCapitol Hill, one block south of Volunteer Park. The nine homes include studio, one bedroom and two bedroom floor plans. Four of them are sold. The remaining homes are one bedroom's ranging from 578 to 677 square feet and one large two bedroom on the top floor with square footage of 1,368. Prices for these homes range from $280,000 to $320,000 for the one bedroom and $680,000's for the two bedroom.

Interior of the homes feature 8.5' ceilings, 16" crown molding (living room), original millwork, original wood floors, tile floorings in the kitchen, stainless appliances, slab granite countertops and mahogany cabinets. Storage and parking are also included. The building is also equipped with Wi-Fi for all owners. The developer has also done some extensive work to convert this 1927 building including re-tuck pointing of the brick exterior, new roof, windows, eletrical and plumbing work.

The homes have a functional layout with the living room seperated from the kitchen and bedroom. Each space is well defined yet does not feel chopped up and narrow. The only drawback for a couple of the homes is the small bedroom closets. Half of the space is taken up by the ensuite washer and dryer. The only other space you could probably store personal items will be the large walk in closet in the living room which will probably also be used as a coat closet, storage or small office space.

How does Arthaus compare to McKean in Queen Anne? Both are built around the same time with almost the same number of homes.

Location: One thing about Arthaus, it is close to a park and walking distance to Broadway where you can find almost everything you need. McKean location is a little more ways out from all the conveniences.

View: McKean has more homes with some type of neighborhood or water view which Arthaus lacks.

Finishes: The finishes in McKean are more contemporary whereas ArtHaus is more traditional.

Space: McKean floor plans are much larger than ArtHaus, however, their bathrooms are smaller than ArtHaus. McKean homes come with gas cooking; ArtHaus has electric cooking.

Amenities: ArtHaus has a movie room with a collection movies that residents can watch on the 42 inch plasma TV. In the case of McKean, there is a garden right in front of the building.

Overall, if you like the idea of an intimate building on a quiet street, ArtHaus is worth a look.

Top 10 World's futuristic luxury hotels

World Amzing Laxuary Hotels
The fast changing modes of travel would certainly one day make a big dent on the hotel industry. Only those will survive who have something special to offer or, at least, I would never settle down at a place with belts of my flying car or jetpack intact.
The designers of the hotels of tomorrow, perhaps, have kept this in mind while creating futuristic hotels to lure the global nomads, of course, in case the Time Machine doesn’t becomes a reality

world1. Commercial Space Station Skywalker: The inflatable space hotelDesigner: Bigelow Aerospace, Las VegasLocation: 515-kms above EarthStatus: The human space complex will be accessible by 2015Estimated project cost: $500 millionCost per person: $1 million a nightCertainly, we’ll have to stop this constant to and fro journey and make space our permanent base. And to make this a reality, the assembling of ‘CSS Skywalker’ kicked off with the launch of ‘Genesis I’ from Russia mid last year. Solar cells will power the inhabitable complex made of various sections that will inflate to take their real form in space. The sections or rooms of the CSS will allow rockets to dock. In future, the modules will be used as basis for space yachts and moon cruisers.
With a volume of 1,500.00 m3 and mass of 100,000 kg, the CSS Skywalker will have a maximum diameter of 30.00 m (98.00 ft).
The concept is a big challenge while it tests inflatable technology and fights to survive in hazardous conditions. Hope it’s made to face the wrath of the meteorites, though the hull of each module is made of three protective layers with an outer 18-inch-thick shield made of alternating woven graphite composite and foam to protect against orbital debris.

wotrld2. Galactic Suite
Designer Xavier Claramunt has tried to imbibe things especially to whet a adventurer’s dream with the Galactic Suite which will have around 22 rooms, measuring 7X4 meters, free of straight lines or angles and huge windows. It is termed as the first global project of its kind, next to Robert Bigelow’s space hotel. Different capsules will act as bars, restaurants, reception

The flying hotel with an area equal to two football fields hangs in air with 14 million cubic feet of helium, huge electric and hydrogen fuel cell powered propellers and six turbofan jet engines. The hotel can accommodate 250 passengers driving them at a speed of 174 miles per hour up to 6, 000 miles.
Flying 8,000 feet above in the air, the 165×244x647 feet airship will provide tourists hi-tech amenities including casino, restaurants and staterooms.

wotrld hotel4. The Lunatic Hotel: Hotel on the Moon
Designer: Hans-Jurgen Rombaut, Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG)Status: Blueprint ready, will take real shape by 2050
Orbiting in space seems more thrilling but Moon brings in a nostalgic aura. Perhaps, the Lunatic Hotel concept will serve it all with spectacular views sprinkled with joys of low gravity and an alien feeling. Designer Hans-Jurgen Rombaut of the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture in the Netherlands is quite optimistic to complete the dream project by 2050.
The ’sensation engine’, as the designer calls it, will allow tourists to indulge in low-gravity games with the help of two 160-meters high slanting towers. The towers will be equipped with teardrop-shaped ‘habitation capsules’ which will serve as spaceship like suits for tourists.
The 50-cms thick hull made of Moon rock and layers holding water will protect inhabitants from the harsh lunar environment including extreme temperatures and lethal cosmic rays and solar particles. If the whole concept comes out successful, we can expect a real lunar village too. (Photo Credit: NASA)

The suspended helipad on the top adds to the grandeur of the hotel. The lavish interior skillfully mingles the best of design ethics from both the east and the west. Howard Hotel

The Howard is an intimate and discreet luxury 5-star hotel which occupies three Georgian townhouses in a super-convenient location in the heart of Edinburgh's New Town.

The Howard is a classically elegant hotel both outside and in, and has just 18 luxury roomsand suites, named after Edinburgh streets. In keeping with the character of the building, we have used rich fabrics, oil paintings and opulent furnishings to make the hotel deeply comfortable, a 5-star home-from-home. You will quickly feel as though you have lived here forever. A key feature of the service at The Howard hotel is the butler - actually a collection of butlers, who take care of everything from car parking to ironing to late-night room service to theatre bookings. You will find them very useful, whatever your reason for being in Edinburgh. The Howard also has its own intimate restaurant, The Atholl. This was originally intended as a dining room just for guests, but proved so popular with local residents - especially for our famous afternoon tea - that it has grown into a properly sophisticated, luxury restaurant. It only seats 14, however; so don't forget to book.
